ESRI Research Highlights Benefits of Active Travel Schemes

Concerns have been raised in regard to a number of the Active Travel Schemes in the County. The main issues cited are that these schemes cause a danger to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, add to traffic congestion and are not, and will not be used by cyclists when complete.

While these schemes can seem drastic when introduced, ESRI research has shown that such active travel schemes boosts rates of cycling and walking once complete. There are numerous international examples drawn from, in the research. The knock on effect on local communities and businesses has been shown to be positive with reduced traffic congestion, safer streets, cleaner air and improved health.

Dedicated, segregated and safe cycling infrastructure increases cycling rates particularly amongst older people and women and these benefits are increased when traffic calming measures such as raised crossings and tighter junctions are used. Those that can cycle and walk do so more frequently, reducing traffic congestion for those who need to use their cars.
