Redesign of Suburban Roadways

South Dublin County Council are implementing a number of active travel and increased suburban roadway safety initiatives across the county. Some concern has been expressed that the changes to roadways, including roadway narrowing and tightening of corners increases the risk of accidents and causes issues for emergency vehicles.

These new road layouts are constructed in line with the Design Manual for Urban Roads and Streets which was launched in 2013 by the then Minister of Transport Leo Varadkar and the Fine Gael / Labour Government.

In the Minister's introduction Varadkar states

Better street design in urban areas will facilitate the implementation of policy on sustainable living by achieving a better balance between all modes of transport and road users. It will encourage more people to choose to walk, cycle or use public transport by making the experience safer and more pleasant. It will lower traffic speeds, reduce unnecessary car use and create a built environment that promotes healthy lifestyles and responds more sympathetically to the distinctive nature of individual communities and places.
